  • What is a Prince Rupert's Drop

Prince Rupert's Drops have a bulbous body and a narrow, elongated tail, resembling tadpoles.

They are made by dripping molten glass into cold water, causing the organism to rapidly cool and develop high internal stresses. As a result, the body becomes extraordinarily robust and can endure significant impact, such as hammer blows and, in certain circumstances, bullets.

However, the droplet's tail is delicate, and if it breaks, the internal pressures are released, causing the drop to explode into glass dust.

These drops are useful for examining the interior tensions and characteristics of rapidly cooled materials.

  • Care instructions

The fragile droplets of Prince Rupert should be handled with care to maintain their durability.
    Here are some maintenance instructions:

    1. Handle the drops with care; avoid gripping the drop's tail, which is the most fragile element, and instead handle the drop's bulbous body.

    2. Store in a secure location - Keep the drops in a secure location where they will not be knocked over or vibrated. A display case or box with a soft interior may be a suitable choice.

    3. Dust can accumulate on the drops over time, but you should avoid using water or chemicals to clean them, as these substances might damage the glass.
Instead, you can carefully remove dust with a soft brush or microfiber cloth.

If you follow these care guidelines, your Prince Rupert's drops should endure for many years, and you can enjoy learning about and studying material properties and internal stresses.
